Quick facts about child abuse

In 2011 in Oregon, according to the Department of Human Services, there were 74,342 child abuse reports, and 11,599 unduplicated child abuse victims.

The number of reports and victims in the last 10 years has increased by 85%. Family members account for 94.6 percent of all alleged abusers.

According to the Department of Human Services, currently (2015) Coos County has the highest child abuse victim rate per 1,000 children in the State of Oregon.

Last year in our county, 213 children were interviewed and received services through the Kid’s Hope Center. We know that most abuse goes unreported, so this statistic is probably much higher.

Our Program is aimed at preventing child abuse and neglect. How do we do this?

  • We have respect and flexibility in meeting families’ immediate needs and long term goals.
  • Our Therapeutic early childhood classrooms have a high ratio of adults to each child.
  • Home visitations occur monthly to help families become stronger and connected with the teachers.
  • Provide parent education.
  • We help refer families to other programs such as employment, housing and education opportunities and other community resources.
  • We promote healthy parenting and child development.
